Clik here to view.A drizzly Lake District day was not the best of days for an open top bus trip, but I’d made the decision and I was sticking to it! I was heading to Grasmere to join Trevor at the annual charity classic car show. This event is in its second year and is run and organised by the Windermere and Ambleside Lions Club. I know… cars and GoLakes Travel not what I should be doing. But Trevor has a classic 1977 Lancia Monte Carlo and it was an event for charity and going by bus eased my carbon footprint. So, I set out, with picnic for myself, Trevor and youngest son, Edward. As I mentioned it was a damp morning, so not much opportunity for seeing the fantastic scenery. Never mind…I am lucky enough to live in Windermere so could see the views again once the weather cleared up. Even though there was not much to see through the drizzle I sat on the top deck, admittedly under the front cover. I was joined by two ladies (I think they were tourists) who were determined to stay out in the open despite the weather. They sat there with the wind and rain blowing in their faces and just laughed. You really do get to see a whole lot more by bus…even if the weather isn’t brilliant.
Sadly the weather prevented the organisers having the hot air balloon rides and the paragliders they had hoped for, but it didn’t stop the main attractions of all the cars. There were a lot of vehicles on the field giving the visitors lots to look at and enjoy and all in aid of charity. Funds raised this year are to be split between the Great North Air Ambulance, the North West Air Ambulance and the Local Lions Charities all very good causes. Last year’s show attracted an audience of over 1000 visitors with lots of vehicles exhibiting. The club were then able to make a substantial donation to St Marys Hospice, Ulverston. They also sent 10 young carers on a well-earned break to the Lakeside Adventure Centre.
Along with cars there were stalls selling food and drink, running commentary (which got a little tiring after a while) and clog dancers!? The show also featured a great steam engine that took many on rides round the field and enjoyed by everyone.
We were joined by various friends and family which was lovely and the sky even opened up for a short while and it looked like the sun might come out! What more can you ask for? I caught the bus home and surprise, surprise I was the first home.
