When I found out that I had won the GoLake Travel Car Free competition I was over the moon, and so excited to tell my partner! He loves the Lake District and outdoor adventures, and although I have never been myself, I was really looking forward to the trip after hearing so much about it over the years. We are mostly looking forward to walking the hills, taking in the views, and visiting historic properties. I have also been told that I must try some mint cake! We are also planning to visit some small villages and towns to lunch at pubs serving local food, and visiting quaint shops. I’m really looking forward to visiting Wray Castle, which looks like an ideal location for photography.
We might struggle without a car, as we don’t often use public transport on our holidays. However, we’re looking forward to our car-free challenge and are hoping that it will enable us to see more of the Lake District. The GoNowLakes card will provide us with unlimited travel on most bus services throughout our trip, which will hopefully be an easy and cost effective way of travelling. The buses seem to be fairly frequent throughout the day, with an extensive network. We’re also excited about using the electric bikes one afternoon, and also doing a lake cruise across Lake Windemere.
To prepare for our trip, we have got an itinerary for each day, with ideas of places and attractions to visit. We have also purchased some walking and rain appropriate clothing, including some rather fetching waterproof trousers which will no doubt come in handy! The GoLakes Travel website has lots of info which is helping us to plan our trip, including listings of places of interest to visit and eat. Our hotel, the Waterhead Hotel in Ambleside, looks fantastic and the food menu will be sure to re-energise us after a tiring day of walking. It’s in a great location, right on the shores of Lake Windermere, the perfect position for exploring the Lake District. I will be tweeting throughout the trip as well as uploading a few photos from my Twitter account (@VictoriaJane6), and I will also be publishing some blog posts on my personal blog.
